Two Tips for Those Living in Top-Floor Apartments That Plan to Hire Garbage Chutes

by Thomas Jones

If you live in a top-floor apartment that needs to be cleared out, you should hire a garbage chute from a cleaning company, as this is the safest and quickest way to transfer all of the rubbish from your apartment to a bin. If you decide to do this, here are some tips that you may want to keep in mind.

Inform the residents of the apartments below yours of your intention to hire a chute and ask them to keep their windows closed

Before the cleaning company delivers the chute, you should visit or slip notes under the doors of the residents in the apartments below yours to inform them that you intend to hire a chute and to ask them to keep their windows closed for the period in which the chute will be in use.

When the employees from the cleaning company set up this equipment, they will position it so that the rubbish that emerges from it will land directly in the bin at the base of the chute. If after they have done this, your neighbours open one of their windows that happens to be directly behind a section of the chute, the window could hit the equipment and change its position in such a way that the base of it no longer lines up with the bin at the bottom.

If this happens and you don't realise it before you start throwing rubbish down the chute, this refuse could end up landing on the ground instead of in the bin when it emerges from the equipment. Furthermore, it could end up hitting people who happen to be passing by the chute when it comes out of it. As such, it's vital to ask your neighbours to keep their windows closed whilst you are using this equipment.

Keep the size of the largest pieces of rubbish you need to throw away in mind when choosing the size of the chute

Most cleaning companies that provide this type of service offer their customers a range of garbage chutes, which differ in terms of their width and length. When you order your chute from the company, you should keep the size of the largest pieces of refuse that you need to throw away in mind.

If you pick a chute that is relatively narrow and you need to get rid of, such as a broken dining room chair or some damaged gym equipment, these bulky items may either not fit inside the chute at all or might get stuck when they're halfway down it. The former situation could result in you having to lug these items down from the top floor to the bin outside, whilst the latter could result in you having to spend time trying to unblock the chute with a sweeping brush or some other implement.

Given this, if you have a number of larger items that need to be disposed of, it's best to ask the cleaning company for a very wide chute.
